Understanding PABX and Its Capabilities for your Business

Do you know if your business requires a private automatic branch exchange (PABX) system for its communication needs? If you are in charge of scouting out phone systems, you should understand what it is and how it compares with other options. In the "old days," there was the basic telephone system called a private branch exchange or PBX which required a live person to answer and route calls to the appropriate extensions. It was an internal system owned or leased by the company. With this PBX system, users had to share a specific number of lines to dial outside the company.

Defining PABX

The private automatic branch exchange system is quite similar. It is simply an automated version of the PBX in that you do not necessarily need a live body to answer and route the phone calls. If you have ever called customer service or a technical help desk, chances are you had to listen to an automated menu which directed you to punch in the extension of the party you had to reach. Most companies, even small businesses, use the automated rather than the manual phone system.

Most automated PBX systems accomplished three main tasks. One, they establish connections between two users of the system. For instance, you can call a co-worker by typing in their extension rather than dialling out. Second, calls can be monitored, like metering, to determine usage. Third, you have the ability to transfer calls as well as integrate other devices like fax lines.

Availability and New Advances

There are a number of manufacturers of automated PBX devices, each offering similar capabilities. However, these days with advances in internet protocols and technology, you will discover newer capabilities during your search for a phone system.
